UK's Covid outbreak continues to trend upwards: Country records 30,838 daily cases in 15% rise in a week and another 174 deaths - as hospital admissions climb 10%

Britain's Covid outbreak continued to grow today as daily infections, deaths and hospital admissions all trended upwards.

The Department of Health said there were another 30,838 infections in the past 24 hours, marking a rise of nearly 15 per cent in a week.

There were also 174 deaths within 28 days of a positive test registered overnight, an increase of 2 per cent and the highest number since March when the country was in lockdown.

Latest data on Covid hospital admissions shows 858 patients were taken ill with the disease on August 20 in a 10 per cent rise week-on-week.

The rising statistics came as separate figures revealed the number of people dying from Covid every week in England and Wales has ticked up to its highest level since March.

A total of 571 people had the virus mentioned on their death certificates last week, according to the Office for National Statistics, which was up eight per cent on the previous seven-day spell.

This was the highest number since the week ending March 26, at the end of the second wave and when the countries were still in lockdown. At that time, the virus was behind 719 deaths.

The latest figures mean Covid was behind one in 18 total fatalities last week.  While it marks a near five-month high, the rate at which Covid deaths are increasing appears to have slowed.

The eight per cent rise last week was the lowest in nearly two months. And deaths are still a far cry from the levels seen in previous waves, thanks to the vaccine rollout.

Seven out of nine regions in England saw their Covid deaths rise in the latest week compared to the previous seven-day spell. They only fell in the West Midlands and the North West.

Flu and pneumonia were involved in nearly three times more deaths last week than Covid.

Meanwhile, the number of 'excess deaths' from all causes is at its highest since February. These are the number of fatalities above the average for the corresponding period in the non-pandemic years of 2015-19.

A total of 10,372 deaths in England and Wales were registered in the week ending August 13, according to the ONS, which was 14 per cent above the five-year average, or 1,270 more deaths.

Lionel Messi scores impressive free-kick and sets up goals

Argentina 3-0 Ecuador: Lionel Messi scores impressive free-kick and sets up goals for Rodrigo De Paul and Lautaro Martinez as Argentina reach Copa America semis with Ecuador's Piero Hincapie sent off late on

Lionel Messi scored a free kick and served up two assists as Argentina beat Ecuador 3-0 on Saturday to set themselves up for a Copa America semi-final against Colombia.

Messi missed a golden chance in the first half but set up Rodrigo De Paul five minutes before half-time and then did the same for Lautaro Martinez five minutes from the end to give Argentina a deserved victory.

The Barcelona player then got his second free kick off the tournament in stoppage time to round out a scoreline that was more convincing than the performance.

It was his 76th goal for Argentina, taking him to within one of Pele's South American record.

'I've always said that individual prizes are secondary, we're here for something else,' Messi said. 'We have an objective and we're focused on that.'

'It was a hard match, we know how difficult an opponent they can be. The important thing is we've taken another step forward.'

Argentina were unbeaten in 17 games coming into the game and they should have put the result beyond doubt earlier than they did.

Kim Kardashian puts on a VERY busty display and flaunts her jaw-dropping figure in a camouflage crop top and stockings for new beauty collection

Her estranged husband is understood to be dating Bradley Cooper's ex, Irina Shayk.

But Kim Kardashian had business on the brain when she took to Instagram on Friday to tease her new Camo Collection for her makeup line, KKW Beauty.

The 40-year-old ensured all eyes were on her jaw-dropping figure as she posed for a series of sizzling snaps in a tiny camouflage crop top and matching green stockings.

In another sultry snap, Kim lounged around on the floor in a camouflage midriff, teamed with very revealing stockings and thigh-high camouflage boots.

While in further shots, the law student posed up a storm in a slinky nude bodysuit and statement thigh-high boots, that accentuated her hourglass silhouette.

One particular snap saw Kim outstretching one manicured hand forward as she crouched down and shot the camera a suggestive look.

Very much in business mode, Kim captioned the sultry snaps: 'EARLY-ACCESS STARTS NOW on Instagram for Camo Collection!

'There are so many amazing green and neutral tones to create endless glam looks.  I'm so excited about this collection and I can't wait for everyone to try it.'

Kim's sizzling post comes amid reports her estranged husband Kanye West has got 'the spring back in his step' after going public with his new romance with Irina.

The rapper, 44, is 'looking like his old self' now that he's loved-up with the Russian model, 35, however 'is taking things slow' and 'not looking to have more kids'.

Kanye shares North, seven, Saint, five, Chicago, three, and Psalm, two, with Kim, who filed for divorce five months ago, while Irina has daughter Lea, four, with ex, Bradley Cooper.

Earlier this week, the new couple were seen celebrating Kanye's birthday in France in a move which all but confirmed their flourishing union.

A source told The Sun: '[Kanye's] big smile is back. He and Irina are just enjoying each other's company, they have a lot in common in terms of their interests and know a lot of the same people.'

However the paper adds that the Power hit-maker is not thinking about having anymore kids as he is preoccupied with his own four children, who are 'his world'.

Harry and Meghan take parental leave from their jobs after revealing birth of daughter Lilibet Diana

Harry and Meghan take parental leave from their jobs after revealing birth of daughter Lilibet Diana – as it emerges they told Queen her great-grandchild would be named after her 'before the announcement' (but Palace was still caught cold by timing)

Harry and Meghan have gone on parental leave after they announced the birth of their baby daughter Lilibet yesterday afternoon.

The 7lbs 11oz baby – whose middle name is Diana – was born on Friday evening, British time.

It is understood the Queen was informed by Prince Harry that her great-grandchild would be named in her honour, ahead of their official announcement which was made on their official website.

However, Buckingham Palace appeared to be caught off guard by the timing of the Sussexes' news with a spokesman for the palace congratulating the couple 90 minutes after the announcement broke.

‘Lilibet’ was coined by the 95-year-old monarch when she was too young to pronounce her own name. Harry and Meghan’s daughter will be known as Lili Diana. Her late grandmother’s 60th birthday would have been next month.

Last night the delighted Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced: ‘On June 4, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili.

‘She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe. Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family.’

Lili – who is eighth in line to the throne – was born in Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California, a private facility where births cost up to £20,000.

Omid Scobie, a journalist favoured by Harry and Meghan, tweeted that the couple would ‘not be sharing a photograph at this time’ of Lili and that they were now on 'parental leave'.

He said the couple’s office was encouraging anyone who wanted to send gifts to support organisations working for women and girls.

Anti-lockdown protesters clash with police after at least 15,000 gathered against virus restrictions in Trafalgar Square - while a QUARTER of UK population is put under some form of lockdown - and conspiracy theorist Piers Corbyn addresses crowd

 Anti-lockdown protesters today clashed with police after at least 15,000 demonstrators descended on Trafalgar Square as part of a rally against coronavirus measures in the UK.

Attendees of the 'We Do Not Consent' rally ditched their masks as they crammed into the London square this afternoon, despite Metropolitan Police pleading with people to stick to Britain's coronavirus restrictions.

Crowds, who were also warned that violence would not be tolerated at the gathering, carried placards reading 'is this freedom?' and 'end the crazy rules' as they flocked to central London to protest against Britain's coronavirus restrictions.

Piers Corbyn, 73, brother of former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, was among the crowd alongside conspiracy theorist David Icke, 68, who has made a series of false claims linking Covid-19 to 5G technology.

Demonstrators ditched their face masks and ignored social distancing measures as they shouted 'we will win' and waved flags, before Metropolitan Police arrived to shut down the event as crowds 'have not complied with the conditions of their risk assessment'.

Skirmishes broke out between protesters and police later in the day, with those in attendance chanting 'shame on you' and shoving at officers as they passed through the crammed crowd.

In one moment, a woman appeared to be knocked to the ground as a struggle broke out behind her.

In a statement, Scotland Yard said the breach had 'put people in danger of transmitting the virus' which voided their risk assessment and left those at the event 'no longer exempt' from Covid-19 restrictions.

'We are now asking those in Trafalgar Square to leave,' the force said. 'Officers will be engaging with crowds and informing them of this development. By leaving now, you can keep yourself safe and avoid any enforcement action being taken by officers.'

The Met also confirmed officers had been injured 'while engaging' with demonstrators, some of whom opted to move to Hyde Park rather than disperse.

The rally comes as almost 18million Britons - a quarter of the population - will be living under tighter coronavirus restrictions by 6pm tomorrow, after the UK announced a record 6,874 new cases in the last 24 hours.

Those in Leeds were banned from mixing with other households at home or in pubs, bars, restaurants and parks from midnight, as Wigan, Stockport and Blackpool also saw draconian measures brought into force.

Households in the Welsh town of Llanelli are set to be banned from entering each other's homes and gardens from 6pm today, with the nation's two biggest cities of Cardiff and Swansea to follow suit in the next 24 hours. Residents will also be banned from entering or leaving the areas without a 'reasonable excuse'.

Britain recorded 24 deaths today in a preliminary count as the UK's fatality number continues to creep upwards. NHS England announced 20 deaths, while three were recorded in Wales and one in Northern Ireland. None were recorded in Scotland.

In other coronavirus developments today:

  • Scientists are considering a plan to ask everyone over the age of 45 to shield to stop the spread of Covid-19;
  • Britain has been warned to expect 100 coronavirus deaths a day within the next three to four weeks;
  • Government sources claimed Boris Johnson's 10pm pubs curfew was based on 'back of a fag packet calculations' and 'NOT advocated by SAGE';
  • The restrictions imposed in March could kill 75,000 in five years, including 31,000 deaths not related to Covid, according to documents submitted to SAGE;
  • Unions call for in-person university classes to be suspended as 3,000 students are placed in lockdown;
  • MailOnline analysis reveals Britain's outbreak began to surge after 'Super Saturday' reopening;
  • Sadiq Khan calls for Londoners to be stopped from visiting friends and family.
